Working with the Community
Our Constitutional objective is ‘to promote the preservation and conservation of the allotment site at Moss Row’ and promote the benefits of allotment gardening to the wider community.
Since becoming self-managed, the site has developed into a thriving community resource with 22 plots of varying sizes, wildlife area and pond, surrounded by an edible, wildlife friendly hedge.
Grants from ‘The Lottery Fund’ provided the site with boundary fencing, Township grants supported by local councillors gave the Society the means to plant hedging and develop the wildlife area and woodland.
The Society enjoy taking part in community events, welcoming annual visits by school groups, working with ‘The Green Volunteers’, planting native trees in the Moss Row woodland corridor. We have taken part in Township in Bloom 2015, 2016, 2017 top category of OUTSTANDING and THRIVING in 2018. We have hosted PETRUS People, Rochdale Photographic Society, Rochdale Artists and have forged an association with the local WI group. Events such as a Bat Night and several Open Days keep us from becoming a "closed gate community".
The Society is committed to the on-going development and improvement of the site and surrounding Moss Row corridor, and to maintain and protect the unique features of the area for the Norden Community.
Welcome to our Website
We are a small self-managed allotment society formed to develop and improve the allotments at Moss Row in the centre of Norden.
The site currently has 29 plots with many of them more manageable, half plots. The rental for a plot is set based on size of plot allocated - currently 40p/m2. ( 1/2 plots are now the norm approx 125m2)
We are always happy to make contact with anyone looking for an allotment and also welcome children's groups and other local groups or societies.
Not only is Allotmenteering a very popular activity, it keeps you fit, provides you with fruit and vegetables and helps preserve the local wildlife. You might even make some new friends. >>> FIND US

Car Parking - Moss Row (04/08/2019)
Following concerns raised by tenants, which include a vehicle window being broken and some dubious characters loitering outside the gates, the committee decided to take the following actions, accepting that on occasions whilst working alone it can be a little intimidating leaving a vehicle on Moss Row.
We have cleared an area inside the gates so that a MAXIMUM of THREE cars can be parked inside the gates.
First come first served basis.
Please back in and park as near the hedge as possible (see photo) allowing enough room in front of your vehicle to
manoeuvre should one of the gates be blocked on the outside.
Obviously if someone parks in front of the gate you could be blocked in, though there is enough room to exit by either gate.
Note that gates open outward as well as inward if that helps.
Please us know if you find the arrangement problematic.
In previous years the committee have had to consider some incident or other that involves unauthorised access to the site.
People often work on site alone and can feel vulnerable if someone wonders on site uninvited. Children or youths have occasionally gained access to the site leaving the possibility of vandalism, theft or injury.
Gates have been found completely unlocked from time to time. Those responsible are not only in breach of their Conditions of Tenancy, but are also being careless and disrespectful to fellow tenants.
Of course, we can’t entirely prevent unauthorised access, but we don’t have to offer intruders an open invitation.
The committee takes a strict line in the application of the Society’s Rules regarding site security and will apply its procedure for breaches of the Conditions of Tenancy against any member found to be responsible.
Theft of trailer
Sometime on Monday evening 8th December 2014 the chain on the Moss Row entrance gates and that securing the trailer, were cut with bolt cutters and the trailer stolen. Whoever did this obviously came well prepared and had a vehicle with a tow bar. We have now replaced the trailer at considerable expense. It is locked in the container and accessible only to committee members.
Remember
-
Lock the gates securely after ENTERING or LEAVING
-
If it has a lock on it then it is supposed to be kept LOCKED (Container, WC, Water etc.)
-
Please don’t assume that someone else will lock up – security is your responsibility.
